Frequently Asked Questions

Question: What exactly does the KIDS Center do?

KIDS Center’s services are divided into three categories as outlined by our mission statement: dedicated to the prevention, evaluation, and treatment of child abuse.

Prevention and Education programs specifically target professionals, parents and the community at large with training regarding the incidence of child abuse, signs to watch for and other important information about child abuse. The training also includes information about how to report child abuse. These programs are supported by wide-reaching awareness campaigns such as Blue Ribbon in April and the ongoing media campaign in Central Oregon.

Evaluation services provide comprehensive medical assessments and forensic interviews. The reports generated through these evaluations help law enforcement and child protective services with their investigation in the allegations of child abuse. The treatment program provides therapy and advocacy for child abuse survivors and their families.

Treatment can help stop the cycle of abuse by providing pro-active coping skills, addressing self-destructive behavior and helping raise the child's self esteem. At KIDS Center, many children find a safe and child/teen friendly environment in which to address the complex variety of issues related to child abuse.

Question: What specific things does the KIDS Center need at this time?
Please feel free to give us a call at (541) 383-5958. We are happy to talk with you more about KIDS Center. We'd also love to schedule a tour for you. And then...we can tell you about specific things we need at any given time. Thanks for your interest in the mission of KIDS Center!

Question: I think a child is being abused. What do I do?
Because KIDS Center evaluations are part of an investigatory process, we only do evaluations with children referred from law enforcement, child protective services, a medical provider or a therapist.  If you have concerns about a child's welfare, please call DHS at (541) 693-2700 or contact law enforcement at 911.

Question: My child has not been abused. Can s/he receive therapy through KIDS Center?
Our therapy department treats children who have experienced a wide variety of trauma, including but not limited to child abuse. We can see certain children who have coverage through Oregon Health Plan, and certain children who have no health insurance at all. If you have private health insurance, please see "Resources for Parents" to download our list of recommended local therapists.
